# Creating a product

## Why this matters

A product gives your team one reliable record for an item or service. Its variants hold the selling price, stock setting, SKU, and barcode used in purchases and sales.

## Before you start

You need permission to manage the product catalogue. Know the product name and selling price. Decide whether you are creating a physical good or a service, and whether Dukarun should track its stock quantity.

## Steps

1. Open **Products**, then choose **Add product**.
2. Enter the product name and any useful shared details.
3. Choose **Continue to variants**. On a small screen, the button says **Next: variants**.
4. Keep one active variant for a simple item. Add labels such as size or pack only when the product genuinely has different sellable versions.
5. Enter the **Retail price (KES)**.
6. Keep **Track stock** on for a physical item whose quantity Dukarun should update after purchases and sales.
7. Choose **Create product**.

## What changes in Dukarun

The product and its active variants become available to purchases and the Sell screen. A stock-tracked variant starts using quantities at each stock location.

## If something does not look right

* If the product does not appear on the Sell screen, check that both the product and variant are active.
* If a physical item shows the wrong quantity, confirm that **Track stock** is on and that you are viewing the correct stock location.
* Use variants only for versions customers choose between. Do not create a second product record for every pack size of the same product.
